By now, everyone has seen The 40-Year Old Virgin. Though this may sound like a movie I would instantly hate, Steve Carell cracks my shit the fuck up. And for once, there’s a romantic comedy that I can relate to.
Most kids these days probably have sex in middle school. It’s a scary reality that I’ve come to grips with and if I ever have kids, they will wear chastity devices until they are well into their thirties. Actually, many of my friends had sex in their teen or preteen years.
However, your friendly neighborhood mangaka had his first sexual experience well into his twenties (twenty-five to be exact). Okay, so it’s not forty. But I feel like I can relate. Most romantic comedies I find utterly repulsive. The teen coming-of-age ones really suck because I never had friends like that and never went to parties ever. The ones about rich white people, well, um, I’m neither. I am not wholly allergic to romantic comedies. I quite enjoyed Love Actually and found Lost in Translation absolutely wonderful. But it usually takes something off the beaten path for me to even consider spending money on a romantic comedy. Hopefully, I can drag Audrey to see this one.
